What is Green?

In its simplest form, “green building incorporates design, construction and operational practices that significantly reduce or eliminate the negative impact of development on the environment and people. Green buildings are energy efficient, resource efficient and environmentally responsible” Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA)

Green Building Council

Green building standards in South Africa are governed by the Green Building Council, through the Green Star Rating system.  This system assesses whole building design and operation and rewards initiatives through predetermined criteria across the following categories:

  • Management

  • Indoor Environment Quality

  • Energy

  • Transport

  • Water

  • Materials

  • Land Use and Ecology

  • Emissions

  • Innovation

  • Additional available category: Socioeconomic

Benefits of Green

Recent studies World Green Building Trends, by Dodge Data and Analytics, 2016, including South African facilities, have once again confirmed the benefits of Green Buildings, which include:

  • Increases in asset value of up to 7%

  • Annual operational cost savings of up to 14%

  • Increase in staff productivity of up to 20% 


The above, coupled with robust environmental regulations and a strong increase in Client demand for green building has led to the determination by recent studies that green building is accelerating globally with green building forecast to double every three years!
